Posting these cat-cartoons-without-the-cartoon was a long journey that I don’t know if I’ll repeat soon again. A daily blog is tough … even when you have your material handed to you! But, I couldn’t have done it without the artwork … Continue reading →

Father Time is riding out his last few minutes of being the temporal keeper for 2011; he sits in an easy chair with a calendar showing “Dec 31” behind him and a grandfather clock pointing to the time of 11:53. … Continue reading →

Rocks that rock

Posted by joeabbott on January 1, 2016

This Christmas, along with a number of other great little gifts, my mother sent Suzanne and me some rocks. Perhaps “mineral specimens” is a better term, but I’m capturing a few details about these very neat gifts here for posterity.

Blue Banded Obsidian – Russia

The small sticker on this stone reads

Profound transformation while integrating and healing the Shadow aspect

This stone fits well in the palm of my hand feels a touch too large for anything other than holding and admiring. It’s been polished to a mirror finish and almost feels slick as you turn it over to look at it from all sides. The stone contains bands which are a light grey or faint blue, contrasting well against the darker greys and blacks of the rock.

While I set it to the side of my keyboard as I typed this, I found myself repeatedly picking up the rock, turning it over in my fingers and admiring the various stripes and bands.WP_20160101_09_09_45_ProWP_20160101_09_09_09_ProWP_20160101_09_09_14_ProWP_20160101_09_09_39_Pro

Selenite

The slip of paper that came with Suzy’s stone reads

Is a form of crystallized gypsum. It provides for clarity of the mind, expanding one’s awareness of self and of one’s surroundings. It provides flexibility to one’s nature and strength to one’s decisions.

The stone doesn’t feel as slickly smooth as the obsidian, but has a fascinating depth that invites light and your eye. Its interior is striated and looks like it’s made up of hundreds and thousands of “threads”, all aligned in a single direction.
