Posting these cat-cartoons-without-the-cartoon was a long journey that I don’t know if I’ll repeat soon again. A daily blog is tough … even when you have your material handed to you! But, I couldn’t have done it without the artwork … Continue reading →

Father Time is riding out his last few minutes of being the temporal keeper for 2011; he sits in an easy chair with a calendar showing “Dec 31” behind him and a grandfather clock pointing to the time of 11:53. … Continue reading →

Happy 2014

Posted by joeabbott on January 1, 2014

imageIt’s almost 11AM and I’m just sitting down to compose a little New Year’s post; you see, I was up until 1:30AM and couldn’t get to this sooner.

Last night Suzy and I drove out to her sister’s (Denise’s) new home just about 50 miles from our place; a long-ish drive but Denise and her husband, Jim, made it absolutely worth the trip! It was New Year’s Eve and Suzy’s side of the family decided to combine the end-of-year party with a minor housewarming event. I had encouraged Jim to do up some ribs for the event and he did them up right! He had six racks going and while it was his first effort, he had low and slow working … It was proper BBQ and I enjoyed probably more than I should have, but props for the righteous ribs!

In addition to rolling out an awesome spread, we got to enjoy the amenities of their gorgeous new home. It’s a very open floor plan with a number of large rooms tucked away; the largest used for their bedroom and home office. Where Jim (and a couple of the other guys) and I spent a lot of time was their garage. While it was a standard three bay unit, it has a wonderful pull-down-ladder access to overheard storage, access to a private side yard, and Jim started putting in a workshop in the third bay. It was hard to believe they’d just moved in … they did a great job of making it theirs.

Throughout the evening we mingled … all families from Suzy’s side managed to get over … and I found myself chatting on the back patio with Denise. We were sitting at a comfortable table under the covered area and had a beautiful stainless steel heater nicely chasing the chill away. While the backyard still needs some landscaping, it has “good bones” and I imagine they’ll spend many enjoyable hours back there.

Aside from overeating and finding time to spend with most of the folks at one point or another, the night is a blur. There was a lot of noise from kids, good music in the background, and a warm kiss at midnight with my beloved. On the whole, a fine way to bring in the New Year.

Hoping your New Years rang in with as much cheer and companionship. Here’s to a prosperous and happy 2014.
