Posting these cat-cartoons-without-the-cartoon was a long journey that I don’t know if I’ll repeat soon again. A daily blog is tough … even when you have your material handed to you! But, I couldn’t have done it without the artwork … Continue reading →

Father Time is riding out his last few minutes of being the temporal keeper for 2011; he sits in an easy chair with a calendar showing “Dec 31” behind him and a grandfather clock pointing to the time of 11:53. … Continue reading →

A happy young lady shares a table at a tony restaurant with her cat; they both wear festive, cone-shaped party hats. The woman gaily says to the tuxedoed server, “One martini and one glass of milk.” The cat does not … Continue reading →

Happy Birthday, Mom!

Posted by joeabbott on June 2, 2013

IMG_6693Last Tuesday, May 28, my mother celebrated her 80th birthday but the real party was held the prior Sunday when she skydived for the first time in her life with all of her children and assorted spouses, grandchildren, and partners. It was a heckuva day!

I’m not sure what motivated skydiving but my mother had mentioned doing something big, something adventurous, and that skydiving would be a very fine way to celebrate your eighth decade on the planet. And, of course, she wanted to share that adventure with all her children. I believe it was Naomi, my sister’s daughter (niece) who took the reins and starting planning things out. She found the place, worked out pricing, and built the “who’s planning on jumping” list. Kudos, Naomi!

In the end, a baker’s dozen chose to make the leap! Below, from the left, we have: Sarah, Suzy, Beth, me, Laurel, Chelsea, Dana, Greg, Naomi, Mom, Jay, Chantal, and Tom. Quite the crowd!

P1030260Mom's FinishWhile she admitted to being terrified (yes, the word she used … and you can see the video here), she jumped anyhow and jumped first!! Eighty years old and still showing her children how to live!

I have a bajillion pictures of the day up on Flickr in my Mom’s 80th Birthday set, including more videos. Take a peek to see all the fun we had that day; and it was quite a fun day.

Happy 80th Birthday, Mom! And thanks for continuing to share a love for life and showing us how to grab adventure whenever we can!

I’m glad you’re sharing these pics, Joe. When I told some of my friends what I wanted to do, I’d get a “you’re going to do WHAT?” and a shudder. So it was fantastic to have the kind of family that share my – I love the phrase you used – love of life and adventure! It was truly an amazing bonding kind of thing (so much laughing!) , and I’d love to know that more families hooked onto the idea! And then of course, how nice to finish the day with a grand meal at which I was Queen for the Day! How great is that? Thanks for all your photos and contributions to this day, Joe. Momma
