Posting these cat-cartoons-without-the-cartoon was a long journey that I don’t know if I’ll repeat soon again. A daily blog is tough … even when you have your material handed to you! But, I couldn’t have done it without the artwork … Continue reading →

Father Time is riding out his last few minutes of being the temporal keeper for 2011; he sits in an easy chair with a calendar showing “Dec 31” behind him and a grandfather clock pointing to the time of 11:53. … Continue reading →

Let’s talk about … weather!

Posted by joeabbott on April 2, 2011

Weather … not exciting, not sexy, and right at home in this blog!

I come from the Midwest and, while it wasn’t apparent when I was growing up, I’m now more aware that “talking about the weather” is something we (I!) do a lot more than other folks. Perhaps it was the MN variability, perhaps the historical ties between farming and weather, or maybe we just ain’t got nothing else to jawbone about! Regardless, weather fascinates me … in a “low boil, my that’s interesting” sorta way.

And, combine that with an engineering bent and you have … me taking the time out of my Saturday to build a graph on last months weather! You got it, that’s how I just spent the last 45 minutes and here’s what I have to show for that time:

It’s a pretty standard view but shows a couple things:

  • We were really emptying the rain barrels outside the chicken coop a LOT on 3/9 (this date was a record rainfall)
  • We had SIX inches of rain in March!
  • The blocked-out blue overlay is the week I took off to build the retaining walls and path (score … warmer and a bit less rain!)
  • March can be summed up in terms of sunshine with the following: 0 sunny days, 23 with measurable rain, 4 with trace rain

In the end, we managed just under 6” of rainfall (5.97”), bringing our YTD total to just over an inch above average. And, as temperatures go, March was just about average … with the norm being between 50 and 55 degrees F; the first week was a bit cooler but we had a “warm” spike toward the end of the month to balance things out.

And that’s the March 2011 weather wrap-up from Seattle. Now have a good day!

Uncle Joe always gets a kick out of receiving a copy of your weather graphs… yup, probably a Minnesota thing.
