Posting these cat-cartoons-without-the-cartoon was a long journey that I don’t know if I’ll repeat soon again. A daily blog is tough … even when you have your material handed to you! But, I couldn’t have done it without the artwork … Continue reading →

Egg Time!

Posted by joeabbott on March 15, 2010

When we got chickens a major consideration was the eggs. Now, we never thought we’d get a complete return on our investment in eggs, but having fresh eggs daily from the birds was the plan.

Well, during the first two weeks we got about an egg a day and two on one day … but, overall, maybe just 9 or 10 eggs. Then a cold snap hit and we got no eggs for the next 5-6 days! It was a bummer. Especially for new chicken owners and not being sure of what we’re doing. Did we give them the wrong feed? Are they stressed? Do they not like their new home?

Then we had some nice warm, dry days, the birds got a lot of yard time, and they seemed to be enjoying it. Oh, and Suzy thought she might have to buy eggs at the store and called up to the birds to start “paying rent”. Well, not sure what contributed to it more, but we have just had back-to-back days with three eggs on each day! Yay!!

Now I’m just bragging but our three hens just gave us 10 eggs in 4 days! Go, chickens, go!!

After out back-to-back days with three eggs each day, our Monday showed just one egg. Then on Tuesday we found three more eggs in the nest box! Sweet! Perhaps we’re over a hump or some sort and our happy chicks are ready to crank out the eggs!

And all it took was Suzy threatening to pick up a dozen at the store. I’d call Suzy a “Chicken Whisperer” but it didn’t sound like a whisper this weekend …
