Posting these cat-cartoons-without-the-cartoon was a long journey that I don’t know if I’ll repeat soon again. A daily blog is tough … even when you have your material handed to you! But, I couldn’t have done it without the artwork … Continue reading →

Father Time is riding out his last few minutes of being the temporal keeper for 2011; he sits in an easy chair with a calendar showing “Dec 31” behind him and a grandfather clock pointing to the time of 11:53. … Continue reading →

Climbing season starts

Posted by joeabbott on March 24, 2009

Well, I have a trek up Mount Baker coming up in early May so it’s time to kick out the rust, shake off the dust, and start getting in shape. While it’s critical in mountaineering to know how to handle yourself in the hills, the thing you do the most is just go go go. It’s a long day of being on trail, on rock, and on snow and ice. So, first thing I do when getting back in shape is just start hiking. Over the past few weekends, I’ve taken a few trips.

My first hard hike was with Adam and his dog, Dash. We climbed a local training mountain called Mailbox Peak. It’s really just a high point on a ridge but the route is steep and unforgiving and you get a heckuva workout. Unfortunately for me, I wasn’t in shape enough to fight through all the recent snow and I turned back at the top of a scree field some ways below the summit. Still, it was good to get out but there have been nicer days. I was whooped.

I headed back to Mailbox by myself a weekend or two later and while the temps were chilly in the AM, I made it about as far before turning around. Suzy was heading out of town a day or two later and I knew I was getting out again the next day so I wanted to spend some time at home. Two hours up, one down, and then some errands before getting home.

cold out!

And the “next day” came and I headed up another local training route called Mt. Si. It’s not as unforgiving and the trail is pretty decent. Still, you keep going up for a long time. On that hike I was joined by Adam, Dash, and another friend, Scott. My legs held out but I was pushing hard toward the end. Still, I wasn’t crippled from it and that was good.

The rest of the day was spend playing video games (Gears of War 2), working on some SketchUp (a previous post), and having dinner with Suz. She’s away now at a conference so tonight I “batched it”. Which means I did some chores around the house, played a bit more Gears, and finishing up this before calling it a day. Pretty much what I’d do if Suzanne was home! 🙂
