Posting these cat-cartoons-without-the-cartoon was a long journey that I don’t know if I’ll repeat soon again. A daily blog is tough … even when you have your material handed to you! But, I couldn’t have done it without the artwork … Continue reading →

Father Time is riding out his last few minutes of being the temporal keeper for 2011; he sits in an easy chair with a calendar showing “Dec 31” behind him and a grandfather clock pointing to the time of 11:53. … Continue reading →

Hiking the Enchantments

Posted by joeabbott on February 1, 2009

I’m posting this information as I’ve been in the Enchantments many times and always enjoyed the experience … whether climbing something technical (Prussik Peak, Dragontail

To hike the Enchantments between June 15 and October 15, you need a permit. Outside of those times, you don’t need one … but get ready for snow. 🙂

You should start your planning by choosing several dates that are acceptable to you. The permit form asks for several options and the more you have, the better the chance to get out there. The permit system works like this:

  • All permit requests in a bucket
  • They draw out a request
  • They give the person who entered that request the first open slot that the schedule can accommodate
  • If you only have one choice and the basin is full … you don’t get in

Once you have your choices, go to the Reservation PDF, print it out, fill it in, and mail it in!

It is critical you get this sent in with your application processing payment by 2/21!

Once you have this done, you wait. Sometime mid-March or a bit later you will hear in writing on your permit.

Last year we’d requested a Core Enchantment Zone permit with option for Colchuck Lake Zone … we didn’t get our first option but were happy with the second option. Things to think about.

You will need a trailhead parking permit but you can get it when you pick up your permit.
