Posting these cat-cartoons-without-the-cartoon was a long journey that I don’t know if I’ll repeat soon again. A daily blog is tough … even when you have your material handed to you! But, I couldn’t have done it without the artwork … Continue reading →

Father Time is riding out his last few minutes of being the temporal keeper for 2011; he sits in an easy chair with a calendar showing “Dec 31” behind him and a grandfather clock pointing to the time of 11:53. … Continue reading →

A happy young lady shares a table at a tony restaurant with her cat; they both wear festive, cone-shaped party hats. The woman gaily says to the tuxedoed server, “One martini and one glass of milk.” The cat does not … Continue reading →

What I’m reading now

Posted by joeabbott on December 11, 2008

Just a quick note on what I’m reading now.

I have a ton of books on the backlog and more seem to show up daily. Still, I’m woking through them as fast as I can.

In the car I’m listening to George Orwell’s 1984. It’s interesting to return to this high school required bit of reading if only to better remember the details. It’s also interesting understanding a bit of the backstory on why Orwell wrote it and reflect on things I’ve learned since then. It’s good but I’ll be happy when it’s over and I can get to some lighter material.

By the bedside I have started a book called The Essential Marcus Aurelius. It is a translation of the writings of a Roman emperor, Marcus Aurelius, who was writing to himself; reminders of the Stoic philospophies he’d learned and lifestyle he lived. It’s all around good stuff and the sort of book you should work through slowly and appreciate.

In direct contrast to that, I’m also paging through a few collections of the Pearls Before Swine comics. Can’t get enough! Hulloooo, Zeeba neighba!

And, finally, on the bus ride into work and the walk to the office I’m listening to Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die. It’s the sort of book I wish I were reading, rather than listening to. The ideas are thought provoking and I’d like to read, mull, reference, reread, and then move on. Unfortunately, the material comes at me as quick as the narrator is reading and, I fear, leaving just as quickly. I’ll have to relisten to this one.

And that’s it for now!
